The original laserdisc releases of Dario Argentos pictures in Japan were some of the most sought after back in the day; simply because they were practically impossible to obtain uncut anywhere else.
The Creepers version of Phenomena, for example, was already missing almost 30 minutes of story and then it was cut for violence after that. Argento enthusiasts, like myself, did unusual things to get hold of a version closer to the uncut original. I obtained a dupe VHS from the assistant director/fx guy on Phenomena and that was sweet, BUT it was all dubbed in Italian; not so sweet when everybody knew that Jennifer's dialogue was recorded synch.
Then, years later, Roan Group released the uncut Phenomena version on laserdisc. I was first in line at the local LD store in Oslo with expectations through the roof. -And sure enough, it was a beauty. Long, uncut, commentaries, even letterbox.
Yes... letterbox. Too much letterbox, in fact. The mattes crept well into the frame at the top and bottom. Nobody commented on this (it goes for both Tenebre and Phenomena from Roan) as this was meant to be THE release, but I cringe every time the lower matte nearly cuts out Fiore's stab in the stomach during the opening sequence. Even my Danish VHS of Creepers has more image at the top and bottom.
Well... Friday I found this: the original Japanese laserdisc of Phenomena. Sides are slightly cropped, but the headroom is as lensed and the bottom frame intact. PLUS; well, it's legendary, isn't it!?

    Collection Updates - Page 12 Phenom12

The next release I'll look for now will be the so called "Integral Hard" version (also from Japan).

    The search for Phenomena continues.

    Thanks a million for caring.
I wonder how the Integral Hard version is matted. I also remember reading an article (in Video Watchdog, perhaps) about different wording of certain lines of dialogue and use of alternate takes in some release versions, but I have yet to come across any. Perhaps the Integral hard version is the missing link.

The concert is beautiful. Was it a continuation of the live show (in the credits appeared the inscription: vol. 1, 2, 3)?

Collection Updates - Page 12 Empty New Arrivals Over The Passed Two Days....

Post  DGTWoodward Wed Nov 30, 2011 5:10 pm

These arrived, half yesterday, half today...blimey, seems like I haven't posted for ages!!

    The comedy classic
The Magic Of Morecambe & Wise
    Another great double act!
    Silver Streak
Harvey Keitel before he was HARVEY FRIKKIN' KEITEL!
    Saturn Three
A Philips In-Store 'Promo-advert/loop' disc. One side is played in store and has some really bad early 80's graphics - with the B side as a store-staff orientation video...so they know what they are (in theory) talking about when they sell one!
    A Beginning - Laservision
    That Important spoof/sequel/tribute...
The Return Of The Living Dead
A bit of a blind buy as it's a DTS title...
    Firestorm
    A little bit of King...
    The Langoliers
And the gorgeous Matilda (mostly naked) May...
Life Force - Extended International Version.

Some good looking hauls here. I've probably sold about 700+ discs since the turn of the millennium and only bought about 25 titles in the last 11 years. I plan to change that soon and pick up some titles that either disappoint me on dvd or don't have a HD release. However, I keep getting sidetracked since there are currently so many Blu Rays I want. The Collector's Edition Mike Oldfield. Includes concert 1980, music video to 1988 inclusive. + Discography and videography in 1993. Japanese edition of 1993.
Clips of the TV shows (Formel Eins and Peter's Pop Show) were not included in this edition, unfortunately.

    Ooooh, Nice.

I have always liked Mike Oldfield's music. The repetitive structure of some of his riffs take on a certain 'musical chant' quality, and his use of vary-speed recording of different instruments to create different sounds was truly innovative.

    Good evening DGTWoodward.
Mike Oldfield talented composer and musician. I hope to collect his albums and video albums 80s and 90s. The Wind Chimes stunning beauty of the clip, a wonderful combination of electronic instruments and ethnic, oriental dance and traditions. While The Wind Chimes (video) slightly tightened over time.

Published his other videos (after 1988) on the LD?
Or, in the late '80s and early '90s on the LD out only concerts (Tubular Bells II and III)?
