http://www.retroflix.info/news.phpNice folks, a lot of whom help each other.
The rule is simply "nothing after 1999"
I believe that access is still by inviation only.
**** COMMENT EDITED *****
We also keep VCDs in captivity too. In fact thats what got me started with this whole thing.
Two basic formats, true Video CD and Philips CDi. They were very popular in Asia for a long time... perplexingly a lot of big movies were released out that way first, and on VCD.
Both formats play in a Laptop easily enough, although you need old versions of K-Lite Codec pack with media player to really get the benenfit, and of course CDi won't play without some kind of codec anyway.
Video CDs will play in every kind of player I ever came across though, but not CDi. The format originated with Philips and a player range they once marketed, which was also a games console. A Philips (2Meg cache memory) add-on allowed it to play VCDs and CDi.
We even have an add-on cartridge for our old Playstation, which was made to play VCDs.
If you are interested, then I could probably RAR one or two and send them up to our online store area.
The definition was pretty much good PAL TV grade until just after I got interested. Then it got really sharp... and less easy to tell that it was not a DVD... except of course by the file size.
Mostly they came on two discs, but some... I can think of one right now which is an old favourite... Trancers... came on one disc.
It being primarily south east Asia, although they were commonplace throughout India I was told, there were many apparently-genuine fakes available. One really outstandingly blatant example that I have is a Doctor Who with Sylvester McCoy.
Laserdiscs were, even then, becoming a rareity. Too expensive to buy, too expensive to buy a player for. Then the bottom dropped out of Laserdisc world suddenly, DVDs caught on, and Laserdiscs kind of faded away to niche markets and eBay.
I really feel for those folks who got addicated to CED laserdiscs. Although we see one or two players now, and sometimes a few discs, their manufactured base was miniscule compared to the Pioneer sales of Laserdiscs. At least for the moment we can still get working players, although I have had no success at all in finding anyone who does repairs here.
If you'd like I can send you an Excel Spreadsheet (I use Excel for databases) showing our Laserdiscs. There are around 360 I think... some box sets like Little Dorrit (Derek Jacobi) and The Thin Man series with Dick Powell and Myrna Loy and Boris Karloff's TV series and 1942 and so on.
