Long story short, yesterday I didn't have any laserdiscs or a player but have been interested in them since I was a kid. Today I was given 245 discs and two players thanks to the free section of craigslist. I really don't want to sell them and my wife is just fine with me collecting so I think I am going to thin out the movies I don't care for and build from a solid foundation. There are some awesome movies in there, Full Metal Jacket, Pink Floyd The Wall and 2001: A Space Odyssey to name a few. On top of more discs I will be keeping an eye out for a player with component video. One of the players I got has S-video but it only appears to be outputting on RCA and I am no good with electronic repair, trying to find some info online but haven't had much luck yet. Anyway, I just thought I'd join the forum to learn a little more about collecting and maybe pick up some new discs. Also, I am from Washington State, USA in case you're curious.

    Thanks

Thank you. It is quite a lot but I will enjoy sorting and more importantly, watching them. It is a bug though, I spent several hours yesterday hopping between various thrift stores, scoping out any discs I could find. I found several at a place a few miles from my house but they were asking $10 each. Too steep for me but next weekend they will be $0.99 each due to the tag color. I will probably clean them out if the discs are in good shape.

    Welcome indeed.

WOW! 245 discs on one go, that is a great way to start a collection. As for the type of connection to your TV, it may be that the composite is the best picture you would get anyway. I would not worry about it too much though, as LD was, at its core, a composite format. In theory at least, that should really give you the best picture anyway.

Sadly, as far as I can recall, there was never a player that had component connections that worked for LD. With the LD/DVD combo players that did have them (the U.S. version of the DVL range, like the DVL-909), I believe that the RGB/component element of the player was for DVD output only....

    DVL-909 U.S. Version Back Panel.

My 909 is identical but has a pair of 21 pin Euro-connectors in place of the component sockets.

All the best and enjoy the forum

The DVL-919 has component and it doesn't state that it is only for dvd like the DVL-91 but I could be mireading stuff. Anyway, I am torn right now between the two. There is a DVL-91 a couple miles away from me for $250 or I am watching a DVL-919 on ebay right now with 2.5 days left on the auction currently selling for $130. I will probably get the DVL-91 to avoid trying to win the 919 at auction and ending up disappointed.

    Hope this helps your choice....

Third post down, gives the answer.

The whole thread then turns into a debate about whether you could convert such a machine (ie a 909 or a 919) to RGB/LD out and if it would actually add any benefit to the picture.

Thank you for the info. If that is the case then I will probably divert my attention to getting the best stand-alone LD player I can afford. I don't really need another DVD player.
