Probably the wrong website to be asking this but-
If I feel like watching a movie and its available to rent on Blu-ray at my local video store, even if I already own it on Laserdisc, I'll rent the Blu-ray.
I just really like the look of the HD and LOVE the Lossless audio tracks.
Anybody else with me on this, or am I a fool for renting movies I already own? scratch

Usually, I don't rent movies but it does happen that I buy the same move on diffrent formats. Some examples.

A Clockwork Orange - 7 copies (one VHS, one LD, two Dvd's, one UMD, one Blu-Ray, one Hd-Dvd)
The Shining - four copies (one Dvd, one LD, one Blu-Ray, one Hd-Dvd)
The Matrix - four copies (one VHS, one Dvd, one Blu-Ray, one Hd-Dvd)
Blade Runner - five copies (one LD, two Blu-Ray's, two Hd-Dvd's)
Pulp Fiction - four copies (two LD's, two Blu-Ray's)

I was a HD-geek about a year ago, but it felt so stupid to be 100 % with Hd-Dvd and Blu-Ray. Sure that some movies are impressive and uniqe to se in 1080p and the audio is very nice too, but I watch a movie because of the movie. Nothing else.

I have nothing against BluRay but if I own a movie in widescreen on Laserdisc and it's a decent transfer, I wouldn't pay for a BluRay unless it had extra footage or the audio was significantly improved. I would rather save the money and buy a bunch of LDs instead Very Happy

In theory, I am like you Bullruckle, but in reality I am probably more like Nissling, owning various multi format copies of things...STAR TREK, STAR WARS, BATMAN, SUPERMAN and the like.

i agree with march, i wouldnt go and rent a film that i already have just because the picture or sound may be slightly better ,i would much prefer to go and buy more laser discs. with a laser disc you get good quality sound and picture and the packaging and art work of the covers and box sets are far superior to any dvd or blu ray

    Nah, don't think you're a fool :-)
I think watching a movie on LD or Blu-Ray is a very different experience. Sure, Blu looks and sounds impressive, but I find the HD digital image to have a rather 'aggressive' sharp look, to the point of being artificial like a computer game. Compared the LD image might be softer, but it is also warmer and feels more 'organic'. I guess it comes down to preference.
And don't even mention the difference in packaging :-)

    Too right Wim,

We watched BREAKDOWN at the weekend and along with its impressive AC3 soundtrack came a very very watchable, decent, warm, rich but not overly chroma-saturated stable picture that just looked terrific.

Even on a very large (47") 1080p TV, which these days are usually atuned to display only digital input at its best.

Now I am not going to compare it to watching, say...SPEED RACER (or indeed anything) on Bluray because it is pointless.

But I enjoyed it, my wife did, my 13 year old sone did, and my mother-in-law did and until Sunday, she was a total LD virgin. And she was very happy with the quality of the picture and sound.

LD is what it is. It was never designed to be compared with Bluray, so to even try to do so is a bit of a rather pointless exercise... Question

Video and audio from LDs personally I like it better than on the same DVD (Blu-Ray does not collect as treat them as a regular CD discs transformation). On the DVD picture and sound dry glass as opposed to LD.
I noticed that when I watch video on LD my eyes are not tired and natural sound is perceived (as well as listening to vinyl). When viewing the same movie on DVD after a while your eyes get tired, especially if the film is more than 1 hour.

I absolutely agree with March. LD better digital video media, released on CD discs (as written above). It depends on what is for you the most important: the size or quality. If the quality, then choose the LD.
