    Hi LDK,

It looks like you will be able to get decent analogue DOLBY Pro-Logic from your LX120, but I cannot see a digital output of any kind to allow DTS or an RF-out coaxial socket to allow DD5.1.

Not to worry, analogue Dolby Pro-logic sounds really great anyway, and it looks like you will get Pro-Logic II (I think) which is supposed to seriously mimic a true 5.1 out anyway.

To connect your Panny to your Kenwood should be as easy as one single red/white stereo lead. But just to see how you have things set up right now...

How do you have your player connected to your TV at the moment, is it via the TV ariel socket or the yellow video socket?

The way I would do it would be this way, because you can do it this way regardless of whether you are using the yellow video lead or not. I will continue on the assumption that you are not going to do that just yet.

Firstly, you need to be able to see the back panels of both your player and your amp.

Now, on your player. There are the S-Video-out and the two yellow video-out sockets, then there are the two sets of audio outputs, red and white (left is white and red is right) placed one set above the other. They are marked on the right hand side as "1" and "2" Place your red and your white stereo leads into the correct red and white sockets of the top-most two...the ones marked "1"

As far as the LD end of things go, that's all you need to do with it. Now you need to connect the other end of your red/white lead to your amp...

Looking at the back panel of your Kenny, the collection of different analogue AV connections are all in the bottom left quarter. I think that the ones you need to use are nearer the middle of the panel and are called "Audio 2 In" and they too should be coloured red and white. Likewise, plug your red and white leads into the appropriately coloured sockets.

Now, I am making an assumption here so go with me on it as I only have a downloaded manual for the Kenny to work with, but I am assuming that as you have your LDs audio connected to "Audio 2 In" on the amp...that when you select "Video 2" it should give you sound. I think this because both my PIONEER amps act in a similar/same way.

Now, select "Video 2" on your amp (or via the remote control) and start playing a disc, an action movie will have good surround usually so try one if you have it.

I assume that you already have your amp set for good surround from your other sources, so it just remains to select watch and enjoy!!!

If this does not work then try exactly the same thing but using the "Aux In" sockets on back of the amp...and then selecting the "Aux" source at the front or from the remote.

    Phew!!!

    Hope this helps!

thanks man, now thats what i call an easy to follow tutorial,
got the sound working but the 2 rear speakers fail to have sound.
on both Video 2 and AUX I'm guessing the speekers are dead.
Currently playing the THX AC3 digital surround version of the lion king.
I've got some soney speakers i use for my record player so i'll hook those up tomorrow
when i can buy some longer leads.
when i go to purchase my next LD player, what would be a player for good AC3 Digital surround?

Well, the folks on the US forums will tell to get a whacking great expensive PIONEER Elite machine and that the picture on them as orders of magnitude better than any piddly PAL machine you can buy.

However I do not subscribe to such hyperbole and prefer to read reviews and make up my own mind. I am certain that a company like PIONEER is going to make damned sure that the products they ship to the UK are going to be the very best they can make them. So perhaps a little better at the very top end, than at say the upper mid-range...but by orders of magnitude...?

So to give you pointers, these factors need to be considered...(sorry in advance if I am stating the bleedin' obvious)

    1) You are in a PAL (TV standard) country but you want DD5.1 sound which you can only get on NTSC Laserdiscs (from either the USA or Japan). The PAL system has this one basic incompatibility with its US cousin, so you will need a player that can handle both formats. This small consideration will open up your collecting options to the world of Japanese LD and there are tens of thousands of those even now.

2a) Your new LD will need what's called an AC3-RF out-put. This will look like an ordinary yellow, red or white socket but is usually coloured black. Such an out-put would lead from your player to your RF Demodulator......a what??!!???

2b) You obviously want Dolby Digital 5.1 but unless you have a suitable amp (and there are not that many around anymore) you will need an RF demodulator to go with your new player. I am telling you this up front, as a must buy item, or your amp just will not understand what the LD player is out-puting.

    3) Aside from your obvious and understandable desire for 5.1, you can also get DTS from LDs too, all you need is a player with an optical output, the player will do the rest. That also ensures that you get the best quality digital audio from any digital disc.

    4) for convenience, you might want a machine that plays both sides of a disc(I am not too sure of the capabilities of your LX120) but it does make life so much easier.

The rest is all window dressing. If you can afford a nice top-of-the-range Elite player (still at hundreds of UK £!!!), then more power to you. If not, then two or three players come to mind that should not strip your funds dry (though there has been a recent surge in the last year so prices are a bit higher than they were), they are all PIONEER machines and are not too difficult to track down.

PIONEER CLD-D925, my first player. DTS and AC3-5.1 out, PAL/NTSC, both sides. Good all-rounder and voted best UK machine available at the time.

PIONEER DVL-909 (or the 919) all of the above, plus it is also DVD with DD5.1 capable...the 919 is DVD with DD5.1 and DTS capable.

    Or as an outside runner...

PIONEER CLD-2950 is a great though slightly older machine. It is well made and has held 2nd hand value quite well. It has an optical out so you would get digital DOLBY Pro-Logic as well as DTS from it, but you would need to keep an eye open for one that has had an AC3 conversion done to it. This will give you your 5.1 RF out-put.

I have all of these machines and love them all, but my two faves are the 925 and the 2950.

    Hope this helps.
