Message to members about Spam from dinodisc

Post  Admin on Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:33 am

We have had reports from some members about receiving spam messages from a forum that has attempted to copy retroflix. It has come to our attention that this site has been setup by a laserdisc trader as a ploy to gain business. If you have received spam from dinodisc, please accept our apologies. We have now banned the offending accounts ( 'jabee & 'dinodisc' )

If any members receive any similar spam, please contact admin or moderators.

    Accept no imitations Very Happy

    Me too....

I had a look as well.

Every single good idea here has been lifted, even down to the monthly freaking prize draw!

I sent them an email to inform them that spamming would not be tolerated @ retrofilx.co.uk as I know that Admin & march have already. As yet I have had no reply.

The sad truth is that there is planety of room for a lot more Laserdisc forums. The more people that know, the more people will keep this old beauty alive.

But to spam and copy an already established site was very low. If word could have spread another way, then they would probably have been welcomed with open arms. As it is, it was a cheap shot.

Still, it is run by a ebay trader...which may possibly speak to motivation.

I just think "What the hell.." about it all. Laserdisc is an outdated format and this forum isn't official. There even is an LDDB-forum that they run through Google groups, wouldn't this forum be a copy of that because LDDB is one of the biggest LD-sites?

It's a fair point. I suppose most forums could be accused of copying. I haven't seen the lddb forum, but I assume it is different from retroflix. Dinodisc was an almost identical copy of this site, same tagline, same forum headings, same prizedraw - they have changed it a little now. That was not the major problem though. The problem is that we have spent a lot of time and developing and promoting this site for free and then someone comes along, copies the site and messages all of our members so that they can have a ready made forum in a few days.

The main issue here is the spam. Mass Private messaging our members by any organization, especially those who target members for financial gain will not be tolerated.

Dinodisc would have been welcome to post a link in our laserdisc links forum without issue.

Hopefully the spam problem has been resolved, and I hope dinodisc can go on to develop an original forum for the benefit of the LD community .
